liver abscess

A liver abscess is a localized collection of pus within the liver tissue. This condition is typically caused by bacterial or parasitic infections and can lead to various symptoms and complications if not treated promptly. There are two main types of liver abscesses: pyogenic (caused by bacteria) and amebic (caused by the parasite Entamoeba histolytica).

Pyogenic Liver Abscess:

Causes:

  • Bacterial Infection: Most commonly caused by bacteria traveling from an infection site elsewhere in the body through the bloodstream (hematogenous spread) or from nearby structures (such as the biliary tract or appendix).

Symptoms:

  • Fever and Chills: Often accompanied by a high fever.
  • Abdominal Pain: Pain in the upper right side of the abdomen.
  • Jaundice: Yellowing of the skin and eyes (in severe cases).
  • Fatigue: General feelings of weakness and fatigue.
  • Nausea and Vomiting: Gastrointestinal symptoms may occur.

Amebic Liver Abscess:

Causes:

  • Entamoeba histolytica Infection: A parasite that can cause amebiasis, leading to liver abscesses.

Symptoms:

  • Gradual Onset: Symptoms may develop more gradually than in pyogenic abscesses.
  • Fever: Often accompanied by fever, but it may not be as high as in pyogenic abscesses.
  • Abdominal Pain: Pain in the upper right side of the abdomen.
  • Weight Loss: May be associated with unintentional weight loss.
